New things on Chamberlayne Road

It's all happening in what Vogue called one of 'London's coolest streets' (does the editor live near here? I think she might).

But it is true a lot new is opening, just in time for the Great Depression. We have a new homeware shop, Home, a fashion store, Supra, a Chinese restaurant, Pomelo, various baby shops, and also apparently a Tesco Express/Metro. Which I know some people don't like Tescos, but I think is great news. Let's hope they all can keep going in the downturn. Also The Greyhound seems to be changing into The Diner.

Update: The Diner is part of this chain, which also has branches in Shoreditch and Camden.
Update II: But where is Tesco Metro?

syrie johnson, a very good client of my wife's curtain and blinds business KLS Interiors who are based at 41 Linden Avenue, has just written a nice piece in todays Standard about kensal rise. some of her facts are slightly incorrect but all good pr for the hood

Pomelo is great. Went there last night, and the staff had to turn people away as it was so busy!

There is going to be a kitchen shop too. That is being fitted out as I write. A few doors up from Home.

Kidsen is a great kids shop.

Plus, the old Richard Bruce shop is being gutted as is one on the parade and the empty shop next to Raj has now got chandeliers.

Some gossip I heard is that a new members bar is opening soon in QP/KR that is aimed purely at residents and I also heard that the guys behind Lucky7 are taking over Nikki Noodle.

Take with liberal pinch of salt.

While not technically in the rise as its at the bottom of the hill, the old junk shop opposite the Paradise is also being done out. Currently its windows are all blacked out but if you jump up & peak over the top you can see a huge glass chandelier and swanky mirror.

oops just reread the previous email.......the junk shop is the shop next to the Raj

If you are new here's a few of my favourite places:

Try Tong Ka Nom Thai on Harrow Road (All Souls end). Amazing Thai, BYO Beer. Must book Fri/Sat. Ask to be seated upstairs.

SLB Restaurant near Masons Arms on Harrow Rd. Brightly lit Portuguese restaurant. Get the skewers (2 x each skewer has 4 large prawns, 3 steaks, seafood paella thing, chips only £30, for two people obviously). Food is great.

The Island is best gastro pub but The Chamberlayne does great burgers.

Lexi cinema is ace.

Magia e Bevi is a good deli if you get sick of Minkies' prices.

Hope some help.

Enjoy.

The best deli though is Angelo's!

Ta. Not checked it out since the re-fit. Heard it has a nice coffee bar in there now.

Had a nosey around and turns out a new health food store is opening in the old Richard Bruce premises and that the old furniture store, opposite Circus, may become an antique tea room.

Interesting.

I was speaking to an old resident of the area the other day & they mentioned that the reason why there were a lot of empty shops on Chamberlayne road was because the owners of AP foods also owned the leases on most other properties nearby & refused to let them to anyone they considered a competitor. With AP now gone maybe this is the reason for the influx of new businessses in the area?

Could be true. Went into L'Angelos. Really done it out nicely. The freash bread in there looks out of this world.

The Diner is officially open - or so it seems. They had a million people(ish) inside, probably all Hoxton lovies boozing and eating packed into the place. Assume it is open tomorrow. Do well to beat The Chamaberlayne burgers.

I work 0.01 seconds away from The Diner in W1 and they are usually spot on.

I would really like to know when the Tesco Metro is coming - doesnt look like anytime soon :-( Anyone know anything?

There is some work going on, but not much. The West End Lane branch isn't open either, AFAIK, and that's been in the planning for a few months more, I think. M&S shut some of their underperforming Simply Food branches; I hope Tescos aren't planning the same.

I heard that Tescos were having to dig out a basement, hence the long time. But you don't see a lot of activity going on so maybe they are waiting for the upturn! I've lived here 13 years and have seen a lot of changes in Chamberlayne Rd. Some good, but I hope it doesn't completely go the way of Salusbury Rd. We need some of the older shops. Long live Card Parade!

I visited the Diner with my 4 yr old. Nice seating areas, play area for children; but strangely no real atmosphere???
Ordered, cheese burger, hotdog, fries that came in a basket but the portion seemed non existent in terms of the huge basket they were served in. Glass of wine one soft drink
£30

Does anyone know what happened to the wine shop/bar (Samson Miro) Is it going to reopen?

Anonymous said...

Samson Miro is reopening in 2 weeks in a slightly different format. Miro was round at our house yesterday and he is working in the building at the moment kitting it out.

I had a VERY BAD experience at The Diner, bits of plastic in the eggs, oily rehydrated food... ridiculously shit service.

I love Miros Wine Bar though - and their breakfast menu is excellent.

Not Quite Kensal Rise but Definately NW10

From Grocery Shop to Art Gallery
artisan opens for the first time this year
6 February to 20 February 2010.

Situated on the corner of Harlesden and Parkfield roads, the former organic shop has been transformed into a gallery. After closing her Portobello studio Naomi Harrison recently opened artisan, a combination of gallery and working studio. The shops transformation has caused much speculation in the neighbourhood. Having stood on this corner since 1905 it is very much part of local history and everyone knows its quirky appearance. From always being a corner shop it now begins a new era as a gallery space for local artists and those whose work offers something different.
artisan has invited Martin Wilson with his friends Richard and Kate Baxter and Sarah Cowley to combine and create an exhibition which will delight and amuse. This exhibition demonstrates the calibre of talent which artisan will continue to attract. www.artisan80.com
