Hugo's

Slightly away from Kensal Rise, but for the second time we went to Hugo's tonight for dinner. We had planned to go to the pizza place further North on Salusbury Road, but it is closed for summer (reopens on August 17th).

I like Hugo's. I like the atmosphere, and the way you can sit inside yet outside at the same time on a quiet road. The food is good, we had beetroot and goat's cheese salad, fish pie, and haddock with poached egg. I'd say about 10-15% too expensive, but isn't everywhere? It's not somewhere I would go more than once every six months or so, and I've never been for a jazz night, but it was all pretty good.

The jazz is good but Sunday is almost a school night,
Changing topic: 'The Boys' Thai seems to be back on song, and spicier than you think!

Tong Kanom Thai still can't be beaten though.

Tried SLB - the Portuguese one on Harrow Road. Was very disappointed - the food was very salty don't know if they had a bad chef day!! 8 of us went and the general opinion was it was too salty. They had run out of chicken, which I believe is their signature dish, and this was like 7.30 pm!! May be I just ordered the wrong stuff will give it another try as have heard here and from a friend that it is good.

Yeah, it can be quite salty as they simply season with lots of it. Very much the Portuguese way. Did you have the skewers? The best thing there. Also, we ask for less salt and they oblige.

Thanks for tip will ask for less salt the next time. I didn't order the skewers but one of my friends did, the meat one, which was good she said though salty. Will try the fish skewers next time. Thanks again.

Get the prawn and steak skewer. Yum.

Ask for some piri piri sauce on the side. Quite oily but hot and delicious.

They are very accomodating at the SLB so will not be a problem to ask for less salt. I love salt but even I had to ask them to not put so much on. I think more so on the whole fish than the steak and prawn skewers they aren't that salty.

The one thing I wish they'd sort out there is the toilets. Not in great condition. Hardly ever flushes and never any soap. And considering they have lots of families go there I'm surprised there's no baby changing facilities.

It's such a shame that it's empty most of the week as it's a great place they could do so much more with it.

I've lived near Hugo's for 12 years and I used to go there a lot. We've now stopped because it's overpriced and for the entire time I've being going there the service has been sullen and unhelpful. When you go there during the day at the weekend - ie. brunch - they treat you as if you're more of a nuisance than anything. I hate the place's pretensions to grandeur and crap service. Give it a miss - they're are much better restaurants around - not least of which is the North London Tavern - consistently brilliant.

I agree. Hugo's is up its own ass. The milk they use in the coffee makes it taste awful and overpriced.

Oh dear, I like Hugo's but haven't been for ages (damn you credit crunch). The service is a bit sh1t but I'd got to know one of the waiters. Found out last week that he has now left! My boyfriend spoke to him and apparently Hugo's has not been doing well for a while. Serves it right for having crap service I suppose.
